Keep Mosquitoes at Bay

If you are travelling in a malarial zone, a mosquito net is vital. It is said that mosquitoes have killed more people than war. Mosquitoes feed on the blood of humans. As they move from host to host, they can take blood born diseases with them. Dengue fever, Ross River Fever, various forms of encephalities and malaria can be transmitted by mosquitoes. According to the Centers for Disease Control, mosquitoes kill 2 million each year. It is particularly tragic that most of these deaths are children; their young bodies unable to put up much of a defence against the onslaught.

Bell nets are probably the most recognisable form of mosqutio nets. Suspended from a ring, they fan out to cover your bed. For bell, box and wedge nets which require hanging, the necessary hanging kit is supplied. All that is required is somewhere to attach them (e.g. a hook, beam or cord).

Freestanding nets pop up like tents and can be used by those out camping or who don't have somewhere from which they can hang a traditional net.

Those who are moving around and/or don't necessarily know where they will be sleeping, compact mosquito nets are ideal. Whilst products large enough to cover even double beds are available, their design means they can be collapsed down small enough to be stored in a compression bag. They are small enough to be carried in backpacks or hand luggage; the perfect choice for those off travelling the globe or trekking around Africa.

It is the recommendation of the World Health Organisation that all those travelling within malarial zones take with them a mosquito net impregnated with a strong insecticide. Long Lasting Impregnation (LLI) kills mosquitoes as soon as they land on the net. The LLI lasts for 2 years, after which it can be impregnated with commercially available anti-mosquito treatments. Reimpregnation is a simple process that can be carried out at home. Draw the net through a solution of the anti-mosquito treatment and leave to dry.

Mosquitoes are a particular problem at night, but are actually active for the whole period between dusk and dawn. If you are planning activities during the early morning or evening, it's still important to keep yourself protected by mosquitoes. You may be up and moving, but that won't stop them trying to bite. Head nets are made of a fine mesh that offers you clear vision while also keeping the mosquitoes off your face.

Of course, mosquitoes can be a pest even if they are not carrying dangerous diseases. For that reason, some mosquito nets are available in non LLI versions which are suitable for using in the UK and other non malarial areas.

If you're travelling in sub-Saharan Africa, Asia or the Americas, it's very important you take a mosquito net with you. Whether you're staying in a double bed in a single hotel or hiking through the mountains, sleeping beneath the stars every night, there's a net suitable for your needs. Malaria is a terrible problem, but there are simple steps you can take to avoid the worst of it.

Structured Cabling for all your technology needs!

Always having those annoying technological problems with your phone system or internet? Is swearing at your tablet a daily occurence? Well, things get better. Data cabling equpiment and services can speed up your connection and reduce hitches.

Do you remember the 1990s? Back when the Internet was new and exciting (or the sole retreat of spotty youths, depending on your viewpoint). Do you remember the first time you Googled something? Or bought something off Amazon? How exciting and novel it all seemed that all these sources of information and commerce just seemed to be out there somewhere. Those days have gone. The pressure for better connectivity has seriously increased and become a high priority amongst both internet and network cabling providers. Fibre Optic Cabling is one of the most recent and vast becoming popular, must have choice for internet users, due to its far faster connection speeds and carrying capacity rather than twisted pair conductors, DSL or coaxial cable. The fibre optic data cabling is a particular technology that uses glass threads to submit data. The cable allows high speeds and reduced data loss over greater distances, therefore improving your network cabling system. Fibre optic cables come in two different types to suit your internet needs, single mode and multi mode. A multi mode cable can transmit data up to lengths of 300m at 1000 mega bites per second and single mode cables can be used when even larger distances are needed!

If you don't buy the right network cabling when setting up Internet access then your connectoin will inevitably suffer. It can, however, be difficult to know which is the right one, as the range of Ethernet cables continues to increase. The average person is advised to install either a CAT5 or a CAT5e cable, as they provide up to 350m. However, for those who need higher speeds it would actually be more beneficial to opt for the CAT6 cable, with up to 550m or even the new CAT7 cable with up to 1000m.

Most people will opt for BT when setting up a new phone linebecause they are the most familiar. It's understandable; there are enough headaches when you are moving house or office and the fewer you make for yourself the better. However, did you know there are dozens of service providers all with offers, such as free installation, free call outs and often even cheaper rates? The types of phone systems businesses can choose from include the simple analogue/PSTN, a simple phone or fax line designed for receiving just one call at a time, ISDN2 - similar to the basic analogue line, only this can receive two calls as opposed to one. Alternatively there is the option of the ISDN30; often used for slightly larger businesses this system has a minimum of 8 channels and a maximum of 30. And there are just as many handsets out there to choose from. For instance, the new Toshiba Strata CIX40 is perfect for smaller or start up companies, featuring a state of the art voice mail system, with 360 mailboxes and 40 hours worth of storage, allowing businesses to present a highly professional image towards their clients, no matter what their size.

How to Choose a Curtain Pole

A good curtain pole will change the way your curtains hang, enhancing the look of your room. Buying a curtain pole may not be as straightforward as you first thought; they can range between straight plastic poles with rings to a curtain track with automatic closing and opening on a light sensor.

Curtain poles can be both manually operated and cord-operated, poles with rings or gliders, or even electronically operated for home protection and convenience. Curtain rails can be bought in different materials and colours to complement a room; either coloured plastic, or wood or metal with a different finish (paint or varnish). Whichever material you use for your track or pole, it is important that it will support the weight of the curtains which will hang from them; it might be better to splash out on a high quality pole which will last for years.

Corded tracks work differently to simple poles with rings as they allow the opening or closing of the curtains by pulling a nylon cord which works on a system of gliders and pulleys. This stops you having to handle the curtain, which will shield delicate fabrics from damage. Pull-cord openings are also useful if the curtains are particularly tall and difficult to manage. Buying a spray-lubricant will make sure that the tracks work as efficiently as poles with rings.

Electronically operated curtains are an alternative to manually operated poles with rings or cord-operated curtains, but are more expensive. They provide similar advantages as corded tracks, but can be remotely controlled by a controller, light sensor or timer. The latter two enable the opening and closing of the curtains when nobody is in the home, adding to home security.

Whichever style of curtain pole you choose it is important to make sure the size and shape are right. Curtain rails come in different sizes, so measuring the window area is essential. Measure the recess width of the window with a metal tape measure, and note the figure down. Also choose the number of centimetres you will need either side of the window for when your curtains are open, you will need this so the curtains do not restrict daylight once open. The number is usually around 15cm to 20cm on each side, but may need to be more for wider or thicker curtains. Add twice this width (once for each side) to the width of the actual window to get a total. This will give you the minimum length required for your new curtain rail. Extra wide windows will need multiple rails combined together by a joiner or good curtain rail retailer. Bay windows are all different shapes and sizes, meaning that measuring is more difficult. You will need to add the depth of your bay to the total length of the rail, but it is most likely that the rail will need to be adjusted to measure by the retailer, or, if you are handy, bent and cut at home.

You can give poles with rings a number of unique features to add to the look of the room. Finials and midials can be bought in different materials and effects to finish the look of your window, as can curtain ties or hold-backs.

Training for Manual Handling at Work

If you are a business owner, make sure your employees undertake manual handling training. In the UK, you are obliged by law to ensure anyone in your organisation who undertakes manual handling should be properly trained. Over a third of all injuries which result in someone being off work for more than one day are the result of poor manual handling. That’s a lot of sick pay and a lot of work that has to be covered.

Manual handling at work tutorials offer not just coaching, but context. The presentations begin by detailing how your back functions, so you can better appreciate how and why inadequate manual handling damages it. Description is coupled with stories from spine experts and those that have harmed their spines through poor manual handling.

First, you need to know, appreciate and assess what you are about to do. You will be taught what you need to check, what you need to think about and which questions you need to be asking yourself before you carry out any form of manual handling. From there, it’s an easy to follow step-by-step guide which shows you exactly how to go about each stage of the task.

Manual handling at work can take a number of forms. The study course gives you suggestions and shows the exact concerns of each . For anyone who is lifting a heavy box down from height then you need to make sure you don’t drop it and hurt yourself, whilst also making sure taking the strain of the weight isn't going to lead to injury to your spine. Other designs of manual handling which are discussed include lifting from floor, waist and shoulder height, team lifts, pushing and pulling.

Each section of the training programme is followed by a 20 minute test to check each individual understands the subject. Once the test has been completed to a satisfactory degree, there is a printable certificate for each individual to show they have completed their manual handling training.

Whether at home, work or play, it's important to understand proper manual handling. It’s not just at work that we move things. Plenty of day-to-day activities can be fraught with the danger of back injury if carried out incorrectly. Carrying a pet, emptying the wardrobe, pushing a car on a cold morning. They all involve manual exertion and the potential for injury.

The manual handling training course only takes half an hour to finish and can be carried out online or on CD-ROM. A free trial is available without necessity for credit card details; which means you have the freedom to walk away if it’s not for you. Before you do, just consider the time, money and spines that may be saved if a bit of time is invested in ensuring that you know what you are doing.

Travel the Earth on a Safe Tummy

What are the best methods for treating drinking water abroad? This is a very common question amongst travellers who may not have access to clean drinking or bottled water. Boiling water is a great method, but is not always practical. Here we look at alternatives to boiling water.

Chlorine dioxide tablets are amongst the safest and most effective chemical water disinfectants on the market. They kill bacteria, viruses and cysts in water (including giardia and cryptosporidium). They can be used to treat drinking water, as well as water used for cleaning your teeth and preparing fruit. There is no need for additional neutralising tablets because chlorine dioxide tablets have no taste. The tablets can be used to treat up to 30 litres of water and are safe for long term use.

Iodine used to be a very common water treatment and was widely available to purchase in the UK. However, iodine is not being supported under the EU Biocides Directive and so most manufacturers have discontinued supplying iodine products since 2009. We now recommend using chlorine dioxide tablets; a great alternative.

The Aquapure Traveller bottle is a handy solution for those with a bit more space in their rucksack. It utilises the latest M.A.D. (Mechanically Advanced Disinfection) Technology, a chemical free system that not only does a better job than the original product, but also has a faster flow rate: all without chemicals. The bottle was designed to provide safe drinking water that tastes decent. Its filter cap will purify around 350 litres during its lifetime, and is the sole portable water purifier officially endorsed by the Hospital of Tropical Diseases London. It is kind to the environment; by using the Aquapure Traveller, you are helping the environment by not disposing of the equivalent of 700 plastic bottles per filter. It is easy to use. There aren't any chemicals or complicated produces; you just fill it and drink. Aquapure Traveller removes bacteria and viruses including E. Coli, polio, hepatitis A and others. It removes waterborne pathogens, including giardia, cryptosporidium, etc. It eliminates toxic chemicals and heavy metals, and bad tastes, odours and sediment. It's the perfect solution for holiday makers, backpackers, trekkers, business travellers and, in fact, anybody who requires access to pure, fresh water anywhere in the world. Replacement filters can be obtained and can be replaced by simply taking off the old cap and screwing on a new one.

Bimuno Travelaid helps keep the stomach healthy while abroad. This truly unique patented formula has been specially designed for travellers by experts in digestive health. Experiments suggest that the unique second generation prebiotic galacto-oligosaccharide formulation of Bimuno Travelaid helps to encourage and sustain a normal level of your gut’s “good” bacteria (bifidobacteria) helping to prevent “bad bacteria” from becoming established. Furthermore, unlike other prebiotics, or indeed probiotics, it also has unique anti-adhesive properties, which help the body to drive out “bad” bacteria you might have consumed. By this combined effect of maintaining a favourable balance of “good” bacteria and preventing bad bacteria from finding a home you can aid in keeping your stomach happy. Because the protective benefits of Travelaid build over time, it is recommended that you take the product for a week before your departure and each day whilst you are abroad. Because of its effectiveness, Travelaid is recommended by numerous travel clinicians and Bimuno is an approved travel industry partner of ABTA.

I hope you found this article about chlorine tablets for water purification interesting and informative.

Keeping You Surfing Even in a Crisis

Fifteen years ago, most companies still didn't regularly use internet access. There were plenty of computers and networks, but large scale e-commerce was still a few years away. Those who did have it had to put up with load times that often extended into the minutes and as for downloading audio or visual files, well... you might as well have driven to the server. Barely more than a decade later, things couldn't be any more different. There isn’t a business or event in the country that doesn’t rely on the exchange of information online in order to work efficiently. It can therefore cause a lot of problems if, for some reason, you don’t have access to the Internet. Fear not; there are a number of companies out there which can provide you with temporary internet access with a variety of different options so you get the connection that matches your needs and budget.

Maybe the internet has gone down in your office. For many businesses it’s the modern equivalent of a power cut or the company fleet getting snowed in; no option but for everyone to down tools and wait until it all blows over. But with new times come new solutions. Specialist IT companies can now have a 7mbps connection set up in as little as a couple of hours or, if it is a longer term problem, 20 mbps in just 2 days. With such a quick turnaround, the impact on your business is minimised and the fiscal impact hopefully minimal.

Temporary internet access can similarly form a stop gap if your company or organisation is relocating. It can be time-consuming and often torturous to sort out the installation of even a permanent telephone line and a permanent internet connection - particularly if you are transferring a service from a previous address - can be even worse. Again, for every minute that isn’t sorted out, your business is losing money and being frustrated. Temporary internet access fills that gap, keeping you supplied with an internet connection that is perfectly capable of keeping up with the demands of a busy office.

The users of temporary internet access are not just corporate. In these days of Wi-Fi hotspots and 3G mobile reception, people are used to the idea of being able to access the internet whenever and wherever they are. In busy metropolitan areas such as London, this isn’t really a problem, but out in the countryside even reception can be weak or entirely absent. Temporary internet access is therefore a popular solution amongst those organising events in rural areas, e.g. literary or music festivals. At such events, the inability of attendees to check their emails, Facebook or news pages for an entire weekend might be seen as a major disadvantage. However, internet access is also useful for those running the events as social media is an increasingly popular way for event organisers to interact with their attendees. Temporary internet access can be used to supplement existing 3G and Wi-Fi signals with a bandwidth that is sufficient for your customers’ requirements.

The internet is a vitally important part of the modern world. Yes, we once did without it, but the digital revolution has changed the way our society works: and changed it for the better. Whether it’s an emergency job that needs doing with only two hours notice or a major event with two or three months’ lead-in, there are specialist IT companies out there who can help.

Infestation Problems in Autumn Weather

It’s getting late in the year, it’s chilly out of doors and we’re trying to hide inside for heat. And we’re certainly not the only ones. Insects and pests are more readily associated with the warmer weather of summer, but it’s when it gets cold that lots of the problems begin. Mice, rats and even some insects need to stay warm and your nice, snug, centrally heated office is just the sort of place to find it.

Rodent infestation increase dramatically in the autumn and winter months, and surprisingly they can occur in both towns and the countryside. Rats and mice are drawn to sources of food just as much as warmth and the incredible quantities of garbage found in cities and towns such as London mean there is plenty on offer for them there. A simple technique to lessen the probability of infestation is to ensure your trash isn’t left out for days on end or otherwise is placed in a secure rubbish bin. Otherwise, the rats will discover it, start multiplying and you may quickly find an infestation on your hands.

Rodents have a sense of smell many times as strong as a human's. Like many mammals, smells and scents are vital to their survival, because they use their pee to mark out territory, objects and tracks. One can deter rodents by laying down strong odours. Mothballs are a basic and effective choice, although the potent aroma can be unpleasant for we human beings too.Hence it’s a treatment best suited to out-of-the way locations that are liable to infestation, such as attics, cellars and sheds or even caravans and campers which may very well end up being left uninhabited over the winter months.

Wasps are normally a summer problem, but the recent hot weather means that a large number of wasps are staying active a lot longer than is usual. Those nests that remain outdoors are unlikely to survive the first frost, but those inside - hidden away in attics, sheds or barns - can easily survive into October and November. The new queen will ordinarily have left the nest at the end of the summer, but those wasps left behind will continue to look for food. Like a lot of us, they can get a bit tipsy as Christmas draws near, as often the only food available is rotting fruit that has started to ferment. Unfortunately, many wasps can be at their most dangerous at this time of year; as the hunt for food becomes more and more difficult, the insects can become ever more aggressive. Just like rats and mice you can lower your chances of attracting wasps by not leaving food out for longer than is necessary. If there are just one or two wasps about, a trap could be sufficient to deal with them, but the best method is to simply wait for them to fly away.

Winter brings its own difficulties in terms of unwanted pests, but to be informed is to be prepared. You can find any number of small, preventative measures you can take to reduce the chances of pest infestations, but keep in mind dealing with an established colony directly is a problem best left to the professionals. And remember, it might not just be you who’s keeping warm in your home this winter.

Expert, friendly and effective Pest control London for pest infestations can be supplied by the London-based firm Terminex, a fully certified member of the British Pest Control Association. They provide numerous commercial and household services for dealing with unwanted infestations all year long.

How Should I Deal With Pimples?

Acne isn’t necessarily something that goes away when you become an adult. Although the peak period for outbreaks of acne is between 17 and 18 in girls, and between 19 and 20 in boys, it is perfectly normal for blackheads and whiteheads to continue to form after these ages. Once we understand what is happening to your skin that is causing spots to form, it is easier to see why natural acne face care products are the best treatment.

Our skin is covered in an oily substance called “sebum”. Sebum acts as the body’s natural moisturiser, ensuring our skin does not become dry, cracked and painful. During puberty, high levels of hormones are released into our bodies. Amongst these is testosterone, a male-type sex hormone that is found in both men and women. Testosterone causes the sebaceous glands that produce sebum to enlarge and overproduce the substance. Men are understandably more prone to acne as their bodies contain more testosterone This excess sebum mixes with dead skin cells and congeals in the pores of our skin. This dark-coloured plug is what is commonly called a “blackhead” and doesn’t mean one is unclean; the dark colour of the blackhead is caused by skin pigment, not dirt. If one has a blackhead, careful squeezing of the area can remove the sebum plug and allow the pore to drain before infection sets in. One must, however, be careful not to damage or irritate the surrounding skin as this can result in permanent scarring and/or further over production of sebum.

The same hormonal changes can also cause our skin to swell up. With the swollen epidermis pressing in, the opening of the pore becomes severely constricted. With little air getting into the pores, bacteria can proliferate and cause infection. Pus builds up as the body sends in white blood cells to fight off the infection. With whiteheads, the best advice is simply to let them be. Your body will deal with them without causing irritation or scarring... Of course, it’s not always that simple is it? A tiny little white bump we can deal with, but many find it embarrassing to walk around with a huge great whitehead on their chin. If you really can’t leave it, then make sure the whitehead is fully formed before attempting to do so (i.e. when the skin is white, soft and supple). Use a sterilised needle to create a small hole in the spot and then gently push in and down. This should minimise scarring and irritation.

Many of us will have heard the old advice that scrubbing your face too hard can actually increase the chances of spots forming. Unlike so many old wives’ tales, this one is actually true. The harshest cleaning regimes may feel like they do the most good, but they can cause major irritation of the skin. Though it can cause problems, your skin needs sebum and its natural reaction to having it removed is to produce more. Many high street acne face care products cause the same trouble. Some contain petrochemicals - which prevent the skin from breathing - and harsh cleaning products - which cause irritation and provoke a defensive reaction from your skin.

Natural and organic acne face care products do not attempt to remove sebum completely. Instead, they balance our body’s production of the chemical. Deep cleansing masks clear out the pores and remove dirt. Some of the treatments are multipurpose, both concealing and tackling spots.

Acne is a natural part of life and nothing to be embarrassed about. If, however, you want to take some steps to try and minimise your outbreaks, it’s always best to go for natural acne face care products.

Protect Your Car With Autoglym LifeShine car paint protection

We all love that new car look. You pick it up from the showroom, the seats are soft, the paint is bright and the glass is smudge free. Not a hint of dirt hanging about any of the wheel arches or slight but annoying drink stains on the back seat. Pity it never stays like that, eh? Let the kids, dog or - let’s face it - adults loose on your back seat and there’ll soon be spilt juice or coffee all over the place, muck around the mud flaps and streaks along the bonnet. Unless you’re going to put your car in for a regular and pretty deep valet - and how much is that going to cost? - there’s not much you can really do about it.

Only, now there is. Autoglym LifeShine creates a protective layer around the interior and exterior of your car. Not only will the process protect your car for the length of your ownership, it will also help it retain much of its value. We’ve all heard the saying that a car plummets in value the moment you drive it off the forecourt, but much of the vehicle’s resale value is based on its cosmetic condition. Autoglym protects against the myriad smudges, marks and stains that make a car appear old before its time.

The car paint protection service is available to 70% of the UK population. Fully trained technicians will travel to meet you and can carry out the protection process on site. Alternatively, you can travel to meet them at an authorised garage. The process is only currently available in the UK and Ireland through fully authorised ownerships, so you can rest assured that you are paying for a quality service.

First, your car has to be prepared for the process. This means thoroughly cleaning the vehicle to remove any pre-existing dirt and tar spots. Although car protection is most commonly applied to new cars before they leave the showroom, this section of the treatment is most important on nearly new and used cars, as they are obviously more likely to have amassed some dirt. A clay bar and lubricants are used to remove any contaminants that may mean the LifeShine doesn't adhere correctly. The interior of the car is similarly cleaned and vacuumed, and any pre-existing stains or marks removed (we wouldn’t want to be locking in the very things we are trying to prevent).

LifeShine provides your car’s paintwork with an invisible protective layer. The paintwork is brightened and seperated from outside forces that might mark or dirty it (e.g. rain, mud, dust). LifeShine is also water repellant making cleaning easier, as fluids bead on the surface instead of sinking into upholstery (creating stains) or streaming off the bodywork in sheets. When used on car windows, it also ensures better visibility and greater safety in poor weather conditions.

We all want to be proud of our car and that means keeping it looking as good as possible. Autoglym LifeShine provides you with a car that you can be proud to use and confident in being able to sell when necessary.

Interior Design: The Secret to a Successful Restaurant

An ugly restaurant is a failing restaurant. Price, value, location, service and, of course, the food are all areas which restaurateurs must optimise if they are to make back their (often considerable) investment. There isn’t a restaurant owner in the land who doesn’t work carefully to ensure their food is of the very best quality. They wouldn’t dream of opening their doors if they didn’t think their service was suitable for the area in which they were situated. It’s surprising, then, the number who think that restaurant interior design is a low priority.

The food must be good and the price right, but it won’t matter if people don’t want to be IN your restaurant. Worse still is if the layout of your restaurant is such that it is not practical for an efficient operation. It won't be a pleasant place to be if waiting staff are constantly having to squeeze past diners or if one table has to put up with people queuing up next to them for the toilet.

The first thing a restaurant interior designer will do when hired to design or redesign your restaurant is to consider the ergonomics of the place. This means to create a layout which is suitable for human use and allows (even encourages) efficient operation. Most restaurants rely to a large degree on passing trade and for this reason are generally to be found in prime retail locations. Renting or buying such space is inevitably expensive and so the size of the restaurant is limited. Failure to adapt to this limited space can be disastrous. If waiting staff have to squeeze between tables or if they have to pass through the same gap in order to reach a number of tables, accidents are likely to happen. Staff could collide, guests might shift their chairs out suddenly, etc. Good, ergonomic restaurant interior design will ensure that the distance a waiter or waitress has to carry plates is as small as possible. In multi-layered restaurants, a good old fashioned dumb waiter prevents staff having to carry trays up and down stairs. Some restaurants - notably sushi restaurants - reduce the distance food has to be transported to the bare minimum by making the cooking area the focus of the restaurant. With many customers sat around the bars that surround the cooking area, cooking staff can pass plates directly to them. This also reduces costs, as fewer waiting staff are needed

Even if you already have an existing property, it's worth considering how restaurant interior design can help you. Are there any small, but niggly problems that you have noticed with the operation of your restaurant's layout? Perhaps it just needs a spruce up: something to give it a new lease of life. It is the design that makes a great restaurant as much as the area in which you have to work; the Ivy is down a relatively minor side street and yet is one of London’s most exclusive places to dine.

The cardinal sin of restaurant interior design is to go for the generic. Unless you want your restaurant to look like it is part of a chain, then a restaurant interior designer will work hard to ensure it has its own character. In extreme cases, one can end up with restaurants such as New York’s famous BED (now closed), where diners ate reclined on four poster beds. More commonly, this can mean carefully thought out design choices which reflect some internally consistent thought.

However large or small your restaurant, it has to be attractive. Food tastes better when people are enjoying themselves. Great design means yours isn’t just a great restaurant; it’s a destination.
